Mary Harron's original idea was for this film to be a television segment about Bettie Page, but the higher ups wouldn't go through with it. With nowhere else, the screenplay evolved into this 90 minute movie. In order to make sure the film remained as accurate as possible, Harron interviewed the people Bettie knew and worked with during her life, such as Paula Klaw. Paula Klaw worked in the studio that took the notorious bondage pictures of Bettie. Harron also put a lot of trouble into making the film a period piece. Costumes were carefully researched and reproduced. The film used was actual black and white 35mm, instead of shooting the movie in color, and then editting in the black and white effect, to give it that vintage 50's feel.
